Storage options for Class 8 corrosives

Good morning,
 
I’m from an analytical laboratory which has recently been expanding, and we now need to store more chemicals than our storage areas were originally designed for. 
 
We have quite a large variety of class 8 corrosive substances:
Nitric Acid = 55L
Hydrochloric Acid = 120L
Sulfuric Acid = 10-15L
Acetic Acid = 10-15L
Ammonia = 10L
 
I have been advised that the Nitric and Hydrochloric acids will be able to be stored together in the same class 8 cabinet, but that the sulfuric acid will need to be stored separately from the Hydrochloric and Nitric acids.
Can you tell me whether this is correct, and if so, are we able to store Acetic Acid in with the Nitric and Hydrochloric, or with the Sulfuric Acid?
 
Since Ammonia is a base, I assume it will need to be isolated - perhaps on a bunded shelf in on the other side of the room..?

We want to ensure that our new storage area will be compliant with the Australian Standard. Thanks for your help

Hi Susan,
The following is my advice.
The Nitric acid and Hydrochloric acid are able to be stored together in the one cabinet.Due to the corrosive nature of both chemicals other precautions re shelving and spillage control are warranted.Signage needs to identify the presence of the Class 8(5.1)
Sulfuric acid is best kept separate from the Nitric acid as you indicate.
Sulfuric can be kept with the Hydrochloric acid from my experience if you should want to store the Nitric acid on its own.
Acetic acid depending on the strength has a subrisk of Class 3 would be incompatible with Nitric acid .
Ammonia will as you indicate have to be stored separately.
The need to mechanically ventilate the larger cabinet and to exhaust the air to outside warrants being considered.

Hi Dick

Thanks for your advice, very helpful.  Will separate spill-trays be adequate to separate the Hydrochloric and Nitric acids if we decide to store them together in the one cabinet? 

Also, can Acetic acid be stored with either the Sulfuric or the Hydrochloric acid? We use anhydrous (Glacial) Acetic Acid.

We are currently considering purchasing two cabinets.  One for HCl and Sulfuric Acid only, and a second cabinet for Nitric.  The ammonia and acetic acids would have to be stored on bunded shelves, unless we can find a way to safely fit them into one of the two cabinets.

Some cabinets come with a barrier to separate the shelves into two sections, and two separate sumps.   Does this degree of separation mean that we could store class 8 chemicals regardless of their incompatibilities in the separate sections?  For example, could Acetic Acid go in one side, and Nitric in the other?

I have compiled the answer.
Susan,
 The acids need to have separate spill trays just for good housekeeping reasons and so the acids can be more easily located and avoid the need to remove the bottles to find the acid the analyst needs.The less handling the safer it is.
 
Sulfuric and hydrochloric acis can be together.
 
The acetic and nitric acids need to be in separate cabinets rather than on separate shelves or in divided off sections.
Segregation removes a number of risks.
